It was a good experience to step back and briefly take stock of the amazing progress in connectomics since I started working on this stuff (20 years ago!) thanks as well to @natrevneuro.nature.com for the constructive editorial interactions.

"The layoffs jeopardize this resource, which has served more than 4,000 labs for about three decades." 4000 labs is a severe understatement, likely off by an order of magnitude. Even non-fly people use and benefit from FlyBase. It is one of the cornerstones of the genome era.
