Vacancies in my building in my tony neighborhood have increasingly been filled by families that are lower income or even on vouchers as new housing downtown has lured upper-middle income families and singles away. Before the building boom, wealthier people would line up to get in my older apt.

San Pablo Ave is one of the most dangerous streets in the East Bay AND one of the most important for connecting to homes, jobs, retail. We need to make it safer by slowing down cars significantly. We need fewer and narrower car lanes, bus only lanes, protected bike lanes & improved intersections.

Another day, another paper showing new market rate housing reduces displacement and increases housing opportunities for low income families.

A great story idea for any local/state reporter would be to write about a similar "moving chain" for any new apartment in the Bay Area. Who is moving in? Where are they moving from? Who is moving into the place they moved out of?

“Spread risk fairly“ sounds great but implies either - some people will pay more (they don’t like this) so others pay less. Orinda homeowners for example are being undercharged for insurance - everyone underpays for insurance and the state (everyone) bails out homeowners.

California’s private insurers are abandoning homeowners and dodging payouts while padding executives’ pockets. A public disaster insurance system would cover everyone automatically, spread risk fairly, and invest in disaster prevention.

We have hundreds of California four-lane roads to upgrade to meet our mode shift goals. 1) Why does a local agency like ACTC have to lead design for these projects, when that'll mean it's always their first time? 2) Why are we making them design concrete mixes and traffic circles from scratch?

Interesting new working paper that studies chains of movers after the construction of a new apartment building in Honolulu. Paper finds that the project resulted in the opening up other, lower cost, housing on the island, benefiting the housing market overall.

Oakland, unlike peer cities in the region, does not appear to have a written procurement conflict of interest policy.
