I saw this in Emeryville today, & wasn’t surprised. It’s very common to see signs, signals, trees, etc knocked down by dangerous drivers, in addition to the people they injure or kill on a daily basis. Where is the “Car Accountability Act” to address these exponentially more severe concern?

At 4:12 the assemblymember claims she is “by all means a supporter of bike riding”. But this is her first bike-related bill ever, introduced w zero coordination w bike safety groups working in this area for decades, & completely ignores all the pedal bicyclists killed by drivers in her district.

Help stop the misguided attempt to license bikes in CA, it will only lead to making it more difficult for people to adopt bikes. We don’t need new laws, we need the existing classifications of e-bikes to be properly enforced. bikeeastbay.org/say-no-to-ma...!

In 2022 I inquired w San Ramon staff wrt protected bikeway upgrades via upcoming paving, per their 2018 bike plan, on Dougherty Rd where NFL coach Greg Knapp was killed while biking in 2021 by a driver who drifted into the painted bike lane. I received no reply & the bike lane is still paint-only.

But when DoorDash themselves stole hundreds of millions in tips from drivers they paid tens of millions across multiple settlements & nobody did any jail time. Some reports indicate that DoorDash continues to steal tips.

Here are the completed protected bikeway project tallies for jurisdictions around the East Bay. Among the worst are most of the jurisdictions in @bauerkahan.bsky.social's AD16. These are also among the wealthiest districts in the East Bay, some in the whole state, so they have no excuse.

Paving is starting on 18th/17th St in W Oakland next week, Market to MLK. Restriping will follow, adding a road diet and buffered bike lane, changing to post-separated on 17th at the 980 overpass

The finance department has faced stiff resistance to its plan to take over parking enforcement — and have OPD recover abandoned vehicles. Officials presented their plan at a city council committee meeting on Tuesday.

Alameda wins the award for the first East Bay separated bikeway completion of 2026, so far, with 0.7 mi on Aughinbaugh Way via routine paving. This is the first ever separated bikeway on Bay Farm island. (thanks for the photo @bikewalkalameda.bsky.social !)

The City of Oakland selected Fruitvale BART Bike Station to launch its new e-bike lending program, which allows Oakland residents 18 and up to borrow an e-bike for four weeks for $120. Qualifying low-income residents, including those signed up for Clipper START, pay just $20.

BART also recently completed installation of modern bike stairway channels that make it easy to roll your bike up and down stairs at 19th Street/Oakland, 12th Street/Oakland, Lake Merritt, Coliseum, Walnut Creek, Embarcadero, and 24th Street Mission.

Florida definitely has a major bike safety problem, but it’s not a “legal e-bikes operating over 10 mph” problem. There is a need for e-bike initiatives, but this ain’t it. Florida would be better off funding an e-bike rebate program, forcing recipients to buy approved models from local shops.

Emeryville has installed its 1st bike signal actuation confirmation light at 59th/Hollis, joining other East Bay cities of Alameda, Berkeley, Danville, Fremont, & Oakland which also have them. However I think Emeryville is the only one w a confirmation light for passive PEDESTRIAN signal actuation.

Oakland’s parking department w/in the DOT recently won a planning award for their work. Moving parking to the DOT was among the few recommendations from the Reimagining Public Safety Task Force that was actually implemented, along w abandoned vehicle response, both w success.

Hoboken has: 1) No freeway interchanges 2) Few multi-lane streets 3) Small blocks 4) 60k population in 1.25 sq mi (a little smaller than Emeryville So it seems like the recipe for Vision Zero is to smash the freeways, road diet everything, & build dense housing.

I went back this morning, still busy but no line. The store was nice, the prices in general were higher than Grocery Outlet but lower than Berkeley Bowl. I’ll return occasionally for some things but the store won’t take the place of my regular GO/BB/TJs grocery rotation.

A new study from sociology researchers at Hunter University found that Delivery Workers are the safest cyclists on the road.

I biked by the Emeryville location this morning & there were still huge lines to get in, for the 4th day since the grocery store opened. As someone who actively avoids standing in line for things whenever possible, I find this very confusing.

Since California’s “Freedom to Walk” act went in effect in 2023, decriminalizing “jaywalking”, the number of pedestrian fatalities has dropped at an even higher rate than the national average. We need to stop pretending that pedestrian access restrictions are “for their own safety”.

In 2024 Oakland implemented a 4 car lane to 1 car lane road diet on 13th St in Downtown using only paint. It’s not perfect but this relatively cheap change has helped a lot w speeding. The perpendicular Webster corridor is the same width & needs a similar update ASAP.
