Decision makers in outer East Bay jurisdictions build 8 to 9 lane stroads w 40mph+ speeds & no protective bike infrastructure, then act bewildered when there is a demand for extra fast e-devices. If you want e-device users to slow down, first make it safe to go slow.

This is exciting. The Bay Fair platform is elevated & exposed to the elements so a long wait up there for a transfer can be a very uncomfortable time in cold and/or inclement weather. Subjecting transit riders to this type of punishment is all too often considered acceptable.

Some welcome, new quick-build traffic calming on Folger Ave at the Ninth Street Greenway crossing in Berkeley, near the Emeryville border. Refreshed markings, speed cushions, & centerline posts. The cushions were installed pointing the wrong way but we’ll get that fixed.

Oakland’s Lakeshore Ave construction continues this week, w some of the deepest asphalt base repair I’ve ever seen. After these worst sections are filled, the crews will return a shallower mill & pave of the surface area curb to curb. Then construction starts on the protected bikeway curbs.

It’s very weird that Grizzly Peak Blvd has been closed to cars (people biking / walking are allowed) every July 4th since 2020, but this is the first time they’ve put out a NIXLE alert about it.

New protected bikeway construction underway on 11th St in Downtown Oakland, from Clay to Broadway. The town is rolling out much more concrete protection alongside routine paving, incl on Franklin, Lakeshore, upper MLK, Market, Grand, upper Telegraph, 5th Ave, Bellevue, Lake Merritt Blvd, & more.

An e-trike rider was tragically struck & killed by a driver this past weekend in Fremont. They were going against traffic in a post-separated bikeway, but were hit while crossing the high-speed on ramp. Caltrans & Fremont added the bikeway posts in 2020 but the on-ramp geometry wasn't changed.

Thanks I hate it. This will certainly be used for victim-blaming of future bike riders not using the tech, just as we already see for bike helmets or bright-colored clothes (not required by law), while continuing to ignore the primary dangers of motor vehicle & infrastructure design.

Wow, I’m so energized by today’s @bikeeastbay.bsky.social and @avaenergy.org Test & Ride event! It was incredible to be part of the joy of hundreds of people riding e-bikes for the first time. And so many came away ready to purchase an e-bike with an Ava rebate. So many car trips will be replaced!

Ever since the original separated bikeway on Telegraph in KONO opened in 2016 a subset of folks continue to insist that it’s one of the most dangerous streets in Oakland, even through there have been zero bike/walk fatalities since. But this is my weekly experience on the street:

Here is a good example of accessible car parking design as part of Oakland’s new 20th Street protected bikeway. The bikeway curbs are dropped & the width is narrowed w only paint, to enable vehicle ramp deployment for individuals w mobility devices, connecting to a dedicated mid-block curb cut.

Two new flashing beacon bike crossings in Berkeley are live, at Woolsey/Shattuck and Woolsey/Adeline. From my testing drivers routinely yielded at the single lane Shattuck crossing but much less so at the multi-lane Adeline crossing, in line w my typical experience using flashing beacon crossings.
