Asking pedestrians to cross a five-lane, 74'-wide street with no signal or refuge is inviting them to die. This tragedy, and the countless before it on Caltrans-owned San Pablo Avenue, are the inevitable consequence of car-first, safety-last design.

275 kids and parents just went on a perfect family bike ride through Berkeley, and never once worried about their safety. Why? Their neighbors organized, and put on a safe, cheerful Kidical Mass. This is the most rewarding stuff I’ll ever do. I think we have more fun than the kids.
