I used to be a heavy twitter user back in the day. To a point where I considered spending the money for twitter blue (before Elon, of course.) I didn't because they didn't ban the Nazis even though they violated the terms. Same hesitation here, really.

Also just being pleasant and polite works wonders. "Hello sir" or "Ma'am" and "How is your day" adds time and boxes them into having to be polite. Formality and polite is an excellent shield for awkwardness.
