While the phrasing here is cringe, there’s nothing controversial about teaching founding ideals or progress towards those ideals over time. The actual disagreement is over everything left unsaid: that we should also teach true history about our founding crimes and the errors over time.

Blazing through audiobooks recently for some reason and these two were really interesting in that sort of I-thought-I-knew-about-this-but-there’s-so-much-more-to-know sort of way.

This is really striking. I've noticed this in little ways in the past--obviously without the consequences of this situation. People lose their minds when "white men" get talked about as a class. How can you discuss systemic racism without talking about them as a class? It cuts off real thinking.

And this is generalizable btw, and it’s the core of implicit bias. Everyone absorbs racism and taboos against racism in some proportion and the very fact that we absorb taboos against racism is what helps perpetuate our implicit biases.

I think it's good to reinforce the uncertainty, but I don't really like the framing here. The fact that he wasn't talking politics on Discord does not mean that he didn't have a particular politics. This just wasn't the group of guys he talked about it with (if he talked about it with anyone).

Most news I've read made it confusing why Mangione was not charged with first degree murder, though it made sense to me why it wasn't terrorism.
