What a unique episode with the fantasy draft! This is one of my favorite yet Every MBH episode exposes how little I know about the broader baseball history 😂 and in the best way! Also, Leon Day! ⬇️

Gotta figure it was Leon Day, right? Here he is mixed in with a number of contemporary luminaries, including some of the greatest Grays, and, generally, baseball players, to ever put on a uniform at the (I believe) 1946 East-West game.

The one and only Old Time Baseball. I learned about so many new players because of this game. (Even figured out how to play it one more time, via an emulator a few computers ago.)

Say it with me, we need more female voices in leading roles in commentary booths across every level of Baseball. Loved that last year's (very tentative, first steps) MLB games broadcast by the BBC had Melanie Newman in the leading seat for the UK.

It's been 40 years to the day since Bill Veeck passed away. He was the driving force of "Our Team," the character I started with, the constant as I shifted focus from the St. Louis Browns to the Cleveland Indians. Here's a snippet I wrote of the dance Veeck threw the night his wooden leg arrived.

"Locker Room Talk: A Woman's Struggle to Get Inside" is Melissa Ludtke's eyewitness account of the turbulent times during which she opened the doors to the locker room to ALL reporters. Reading it will help you understand the context and the incredible intrepidity it took for her to do what she did.

I learned from David Fletcher this new grave marker for Helen Weaver was installed in September. The family is planning a ceremony in the spring. Here is Helen’s story; when she first met Buck, she was a bigger star in vaudeville than he was in baseball:

We finished our tour on the far South Side with a few other non-baseball landmarks before heeding Shohei Ohtani’s advice (and
@shoelesspodcast.bsky.social
’s recommendation) and enjoying the very best Japanese BBQ in the city.

Then we used the wonderful

map to find a few other notable baseball grave sites on the far south side of Chicago, including Negro Leagues greats Rube Foster and Bruce Petway.

Their were two Sam Cranes in baseball around this time. One highly respected who would go on the be a writer and one who would go on to be a murderer! Guess which one we covered?
