No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition. Which just makes me want to share it again:

From a tiny watermelon to 523 pounds of tapir, Ume the Malayan tapir is officially ONE! 🎉 What began as a 24-pound bundle of squeaks and spots has grown into a curious, confident tapir, stealing hearts every step of the way. 💗 Happy first birthday, Ume! We love you! ❤️

No need to imagine. The country incarcerates children as young as 9 years old daily in youth prisons and jails. Those children are routinely sexually and physically assaulted and also emotionally tortured. They are fed terrible food and given barely any education. This country has done this for yrs.

I think it is OUTRAGEOUS that people are LEAPING to the conclusion that some our post prominent Americans are child rapists when it is EQUALLY PLAUSIBLE that they are simply indifferent to whether other people are child rapists so long as those other people can offer them access to power.

DHS has a whole citizen detainment system set up in Minnesota. They snatch citizens off the street (often with proof they are citizens), detain them for a few hours, steal their phones, then release them into the cold. It ain’t about deporting citizens; it’s about terrorizing a whole population.

Wow, the White House is so shaken by the turn in the public mood that they thought Chuck Schumer might actually rise up and "seize this moment" to get meaningful concessions. That's how panicked they are. They thought Chuck Schumer would do something.

Think about how crazy "warrant for arrest" is as a negotiating point. That is supposed to be guaranteed by the hundreds of years of courts' interpretation of the constitutional freedoms already.

The majority of organizing happening in Minnesota isn’t just peaceful, it’s INVISIBLE. Moms showing up who won’t be interviewed on TV, people whose ICE patrols don’t turn into viral video. The grocery runs, the donations, the people filming bc they happen to be there. Please remember this.

To be clear: First of all, no. The obligation of protesters in the street--whether mere observers or the civilly disobedient--is in no way EQUAL to the obligation of a masked, poorly trained, unaccountable, armed federal force rolling through American streets at the behest of an authoritarian.>

Think about how although Pretti was a gunowner, when he saw someone being attacked his first response wasn't to use the gun but to help them up and ask them if they're ok. It wasn't even on his mind that a gun would be useful. Compare that to the paranoia of rightwing gun culture.

just gonna throw out a quick reminder that in America police kill a yearly average of 3 civilians per day, routinely in situations very similar to these ICE killings, and decades of explicit support for police impunity by US politicians is why ICE feels theyre able to get away with this right now

When Renee Good said "I'm not mad at you" what the ICE goon heard was "I'm not scared of you." That's what enraged him. The populace wasn't fully terrorized and cowed into submission yet, so he acted to make that happen.
