12 years ago Janet Street-Porter curated an incredible collection of BBC Archive films for BBC Four on post-war architecture. They're all still available and it's difficult for me to think of a better illustration of the value of public service broadcasting.

The Beatles’ attempt to buy a Greek island in 1967 is usually seen as John Lennon's fantasy. But George Harrison was also drawn to islands his whole life. "Shell-shocked” from Beatlemania, he built homes on a Hawaiian clifftop and a remote Australian island seeking space. New Substack post:

And this is before we get to support for a government committing genocide, ever more deranged attacks on the right to protest, ripping down planning and environmental protections, kowtowing to corporate lobbyists and treating the left of the Labour Party as the real enemy to be crushed.

The Leslie speaker added a layer of distortion to many of the Beatles' most famous records. Although impressive at first sight, a closer look revealed a surprisingly hollow interior with poor connections. Repairing them resulted in nasty shocks and a stern reprimand from the manufacturer.
