#NowWatching on DVD. First saw this when it was broadcast on BBC2 around 25 years ago. Remember when mainstream channels showed art house movies? Now you can only stream them on Prime and I don’t do Amazon. Watched it over and over on video, foolishly trying to make sense of it. Totally hypnotic.

There woz ‘ighs and lows as Johnny found the Preservation idea wearing thin, with its added prog opera histrionics and cliched riffing. But Johnny was still in thrall to Davies’ angelic wordsmiffery.

Early midterm report. Ok, slow start as thought I’d revisit Muswell Hillbillies for some context, and got distracted by its spell. Enjoyed Everybody’s In Showbiz, and the live stuff was great, but totally floored by Preservation Act 1. This is staggeringly good and Ray Davies is just a genius.

Right, I’m going to work my way through those Kinks albums from the 70s and 80s. You know, the ones with the horrible sleeves. I’ve never gone further than Muswell Hillbillies (which is great), so it’s long overdue, although I must confess to being a little apprehensive.
