Many of the people coming to Ireland are, for example, third level students who pay extremely high fees to come and learn at our universities. Sending them home would trigger “a financial implosion” in most of our third level institutions. Our universities rely on these students to exist.

The majority of people who come here have a literal and legal right to be here. Of the people who came here, over 30000 were Irish citizens returning, approx 25000 were EU citizens who have the right to work anywhere in the EU (a right which many Irish people avail of too)

This leaves 1287 people who are “here without a right to be”. This means that failed asylum seekers who have not yet left the country make up less than 2% of annual inward migration. This is a vanishingly small number.
