Most measurement arguments reduce to two people using the same scores for different purposes. @mpolikoff.bsky.social's great review reveals the real tensions in "grade inflation" debates. Closing the "honesty gap" requires clearer communication about our hoped-for uses of grades and test scores.

One of the main takeaways from this iteration of the District Dollars report? School districts in California have recently seen big increases in funding and historically high funding levels, due to growth across federal, state, and local funding.

I used to keep a list of ed policy papers that followed this pattern of presenting a clearly endogenous relationship, throwing in some "controls," and then arguing the relationship was causal due to some "theory" or that the correlation was "interesting." But it was too much to keep up with.

Honestly this has seemed like one of the biggest "low hanging fruit" policy changes out there. Good to see some evidence in support of my unreasonably strong priors.

Sometimes I take a look at the emails from predatory journals in my spam folder. I, a US-focused education policy research, certainly must have a manuscript to submit to an international tourism journal and certainly the $3,000 publishing fee is reasonable.

Good points. I'd add that what I love most about my profession is learning. This happens at a much higher rate when I'm exposed to different fields/subfields. It can be hard to keep that in mind when things get busy, but I seldom regret making the effort. (I know this is a selfish motivation)

Your colleagues in other fields are smart — listen to what they have to say! (If you think you’re the only smart person in your group / department, you’re probably wrong and you’re probably an asshole).

1. Being a good colleague involves being able to engage thoughtfully with their work. A basic ignorance in most other fields will make that harder and reduce your value as a colleague.

Arkansas is doing some really good things to bolster the teaching profession! And our analysis shows that alternatives to the "across the board" pay increase that some states are considering (flat % or $ raises) can still be effective at improving retention. Important given tight state budgets!!

“Improving compensation is an important part of that effort, but so are the day-to-day working conditions teachers experience in their schools. Continued investment across both areas will be key to sustaining this momentum,” Zamarro said.
