A suggestion for "Hug a Medievalist Day" 2025: write to your favorite medievalist and tell them which of their works (book, article, blogpost, tweet/skeet) you've used in teaching or shared w/ friends/family/community. What inspired you to think about the world differently?

Interesting suggestion: "rather than flat fees, a journal could offer a substantial prize for the most constructive review in a given period, preserving the social motivation while adding a material incentive." Problem: could only apply to submissions that get *accepted* for pubn. 🧪🗃️

We need to change the incentives from numbers to quality. What would happen if promotion, awards, tenure were evaluated on some maximum limited to 1-3 pieces of work? Prolific authors would need to be VERY selective on how to showcase the true value of their work.

An abortion ban survived at the North Dakota supreme court last year: 3 of 5 justices voted to strike it down, but it would have taken 4. One of the two justices who voted to uphold the ban (Jerod Tufte) is up for reelection this year; no one has filed to challenge him yet, with 9 days to go.
