Triggers don't exist to punish us, although it can absolutely feel that way sometimes. Triggers point to our wounds & tell us where gentleness & care is needed inside. I know, the experience sucks. We don't have to love it. But we do have to understand what triggers are & aren't.

Reality: ADHD strategies work very well for many people and circumstances. (Sleep-deprived, rushed, stressed or otherwise compromised? Your executive functions are compromised.) But standard neurotypical strategies are often awful for people with ADHD.

This thread is me sharing how I deal with prioritizing self care when I'm too fatigued or depressed to do self-care but I need to do self-care to stop being fatigued/depressed. Breaking it down to be as simple as possible in case you're on your last brain cell (and therefore most in need of it).

Antisemitism is popular again – blatantly so on X, also in right-wing spaces and since 2023 in left-wing spaces too. (Not universal, but not hard to find.) Jews are unsafe speaking up for Israel, against Israel, for Palestinians or against Palestinians.

People believe they cannot learn, and that learning is difficult. Because they were never taught how to learn. Some of the work I've enjoyed most in the last two years has been coaching neurodivergent students. There is so much we can do to make study and life better for them.

For a long time I didn't know what Mark Manson's first book, Models, was about. Was it "models" as in abstract representations of things or processes, used to improve understanding and make predictions? Or people paid to look good in (or out of) clothing? It was the latter :(.

Motivation is so unreliable. Helps more to set up my environment to make it easier to do the things that are helpful. Have a place to put my phone, away from the bed. (And pillow on the floor to toss it onto, out of reach.) Add resistance to opening social media. Reduce resistance to study.

Sadly it's not always safe to disclose to employers if you have ADHD (or other condition affecting how you work). Maybe HR is understanding but your manager doesn't quite get it. Or vice versa. 🧵

Relatable for ADHD folks

If I turn up as myself, some people will connect with me. If I hide myself, I'm alone and I carry a heavy mask. As a neurodivergent young person I learned: Some people will judge me and misinterpret me regardless of how I turn up. Might as well be me.

It's super subjective but... "What We Do in the Shadows" is the only TV show I've ever known where the American remake was better than the original.

Procrastination when you're not doing things, & anxious about the not doing, and not enjoying the not doing and avoidance… Is a very good example of executive dysfunction. Often it's from trying to force with willpower, rather than understanding and strategies. If you need support, that's my job.

How do you stay sane/reduce the stress that comes with ADHD and executive dysfunction? A big one for me: I mute most phone notifications otherwise they drive me crazy. I only allow notification noises from messaging apps where I expect to hear from clients.

I knew I was becoming more secure when someone reacted impatiently to me over a small thing, & my honest reaction was, "huh, what's up with you?" I don't always react to this way straight away (and it's not always as blatantly obvious that it's their own stuff), but I can get to it more easily now.

Scientists need more time to think and so do I. So do you. Emails and messaging are the OG brainrot, and scrolling makes it so much worse. I've spent a lot of coaching time with clients on creating more distance from their phone, literally and figuratively. Much benefit.

There's a trope in ADHD/neurodivergent meme-land: You do the important thing you've stressed about & avoiding, &… you feel nothing. No sense of reward or relief. It's hard to build good habits when there's no internal reward. I've had a degree of this. I've seen it in clients too. 🧵

I often think about how "self-improvement" is not something we can do all by ourselves. We need people. Sometimes those people are therapists or coaches, and sometimes they are trusted friends and family. Related: "it does take work to love you. but guess what? you still deserve love"

Good description of executive dysfunction. Undiagnosed ADHD is so confusing and distressing. Diagnosis (even self-diagnosis) can be a major relief.
