This letter from legal expert Robert Huxford endorses our position. Increasing a speed limit by 50% to 30mph is not a trivial change to be made at the whim of politicians to placate public opinion or win votes. Its has legal implications for the local authority, its councilors and its officers.

In late 2023, Amsterdam introduced a 30 km/h limit. A large number of arterials were lowered from 50 km/h, 4,500 signs installed, 140 lights reconfigured, and 200 km of markings adjusted. It's amazing what evidence based policy can do. The evidence that the 20mph limit is working fantastic from the point of view of saving lives and saving the taxpayer money in Wales is overwhelming. You can be annoyed about it. But you can't argue that it isn't doing what it was supposed to do.

20mph limit in Wales has reduced accidents and so insurance claims. This has meant reduced premiums, a measurable outcome not just a claim as this information comes from insurance companies themselves. Doing the right thing is best encouraged by showing it’s financially beneficial to the citizen.

Speed is never an "𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿" in a traffic collision or casualty. It pervades the dynamics of a vehicle and inevitably becomes the reason why a crash and casualty fail to be avoided when mistakes happen. It's why #20splenty where people are.

Another week and the Welsh default 20mph limit for towns, cities and villages wins another road safety award. This time the 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗵 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹'𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱. Well done to all involved including Welsh drivers who have reduced casualties by 28%.

Great news: Cycling in London is gaining momentum. Every day, 1.33 million journeys are made by bike in the capital—that’s an increase of 26% since 2019. I’ll keep working hard with boroughs to make our streets even safer, encouraging more Londoners to travel on two wheels.

It might be you, your partner or child. But in reality we don't know who the 489 people were who were not casualties in the 9 months since the national 20mph default was set in Wales. Another reason why the Welsh Government won the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
