Greg Smallwood’s quite brilliant cover for 2018’s The Punisher #18. Wonderfully Seventies, wonderfully threatening. Which made me think of Frank Castle’s co-creator Gerry Conway - R.I.P. - & his principled, passionate refusal to tolerate the misappropriation by reactionaries of the skull logo.

Jackie Ormes's strip "Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem” first appeared on May 1, 1937. Torchy wasn’t syndicated in the usual sense, but because her paper--the Black-owned Pittsburgh Courier--had national editions, she basically was syndicated. Here are the first two strips:

Here’s a weirdity for ya - Marvel started four notable characters in their own series in the mid-70s. This was the era when Giant-Size quarterlies gave way to Annuals. Yet, none of these books got an Annual. Given their short publishing tenures, if nothing else it could have been good marketing.
