1/ I've been trying to think through why the brag of "PhD-level expert in your pocket" bothers me as a frame, and here are two: 1. A PhD is about how to rigorously examine and interrogate information, not transmit it. To reduce a PhD to a mere disseminator of information misunderstands what we are.

On Friday I made my first-ever calls to congress to oppose funding cuts to NSF. It was super easy — it took just a couple minutes, and I read off a script provided by Save NSF (www.savensf.com). Afterwards, I felt good. The pervasive sense of powerlessness was held at bay, at least temporarily.(1/8)

Quantum entanglement is essential for next-gen technologies, but it’s fragile - vulnerable to environmental noise. A new study from UChicago PME, UIUC, and Microsoft shows that there’s no universal fix for this challenge, highlighting the importance of tailoring noise-minimizing solutions.
