I know some people who follow me here are not in a place where they want various updates on political chaos/trauma. Feel free to mute me (or specific terms) until things in Minneapolis blow over. I have no idea when that might be since we're being targeted. But please save your spoons if needed.

Standing up to the small stuff might put you at odds w/ social trends. It might cause friction between you & your peers. It might threaten your employment prospects. It will be *socially uncomfortable*. That's why the train gets going: by the time it's socially acceptable to say No, it's too late.

After months of relentless rapid response in Minneapolis, members of Defend the 612 had a moment to breathe and reflect on the lessons they’ve learned, the grief they carry, and the citywide fellowship they hope will endure. The crisis is not over, and I’m grateful they made time to speak with me.

“We Belong to Each Other Now”: Lessons from Minneapolis
“This extreme closeness, togetherness and intimacy — you cannot infiltrate your way into a space where you'll understand that," says May, a rapid responder in Minneapolis.

I just did the dumbest thing of my entire career to prove a much more serious point. I tricked ChatGPT and Google, and made them tell other users I’m a competitive hot-dog-eating world champion People are using this trick on a massive scale to make AI tell you lies. I’ll explain how I did it

we have got to stop allowing cops to use their taxpayer-provided squad cars and uniforms for their off duty security work, because we have a separation ordinance and yet here it looks like MPD are providing security for the ICE agents staying at the depot hotel

Today my block leader told me that a volunteer had come and cleaned her kitchen and bathroom. We were breaking Costco-much rice into smaller bags at the time. I hope that one of the things people learn is that we all have gifts we can give, even if it is not showy. It all can help.

I am still asking the community to remain cautious and vigilant until we can confirm what this truly means. They said they are not backing down from mass deportation but will be ending the operation in Minnesota soon. 5/

NEW: Federal judges are increasingly furious at what they see as a pattern / playbook of defiance by the Trump administration to court orders in immigration cases — in Minnesota and around the country. Here’s a look at what they’re seeing:

A POLITICO review of hundreds of cases brought by ICE detainees shows a pattern of noncompliance that has frustrated judges across the country.

I have coworkers who use GenAI for code and documents. Reviewing their work feels like someone asking me to do their work for them. A lot of the feedback I give is pretty obvious. But since they didn't create the material, they don't feel shame in its inadequacy -- or pride in its improvement.

Reminder for artists: don't get blinded by the "big number" for an art project. Remember to do the math. $3,000 for a tarot card desk *sounds* great. But in reality you're only being paid $38.46 per artwork. And if each artwork takes 20 hours to make, you're getting paid $1.92/hr

if you don’t live in minneapolis and you’re just watching from afar you need to get familiar with ring theory and stop venting your anger at us, it’s inappropriate and not helpful to have people who do not live here replying to us with negative emotions. stop putting that on us

I'm continuing to read this filing today and it has other amusing tidbits. Such as ninety-five separate MPD officers showing up to the January 7 shooting scene.

/r/letterboxd frequently makes fun of thinking critically about their experience with a movie. They prefer unassailable takes like "it was fun" or "it was boring". That's fine. I get that people tend to avoid introspection. But it's weird that they're so proud of their inability to know themselves.

I'm calling it a day early. I was able to watch everything on my watchlist this year EXCEPT White Out, Black In / Branco Sai, Preto Fica (2014) I can't find a source with English subtitles. So it goes into the deep vault of things I want to watch but likely never will.

I don't understand why people think subjectivity implies meaningless -- and specifically it being pointless to discuss. If I enjoy pizza, and find someone else who enjoys pizza, we both understand the enjoyment is subjective. But we can still discuss where and how and why pizza can be enjoyed.

/r/letterboxd apparently can't handle the concept that people curve their move ratings. They think I'm lying to myself because my irrelevant magic number is relative to all of the other irrelevant magic numbers I've assigned to other movies. My ratings curve even still looks like everyone else's.

I once got into an argument about the illusion of "stealing someone's card" during a deal. Which order you deal cards from a randomly shuffled deck is statistically insignificant. But, psychologically, players get REALLY UPSET if you deal in the wrong order. Someone else has "stolen their card."

Today's reminder that Reddit is full of awful people, a thread about whether Good Time's Connie is "pure evil" has far too many defenders of his behavior. They think Connie's "love for his brother" means all the evil shit he did isn't actually very evil or something?
