In G.I. Joe comics, the Crimson Guard are Cobra's elite forces. But to prove their absolute loyalty to Cobra, they all undergo plastic surgery to give them one of a few select faces. The Fred series all look the same, and there are other series' too. All as a loyalty ritual to their fascist leader.

I think the history angle is my favourite part. It's neat when the Earth that the Transformers/Rom/the Micronauts arrive on feels "lived in".

Not only do you have a useful stock cast of military guys who can be allies or antagonists as needed, you get a bunch of zany supervillains you can throw in there; a sense of history with the Adventure Team and Sgt Savage; a more fantastical/pulpy edge with Cobra-La and the Arashikage...

As @danieladkins.bsky.social pointed out, shared-universe Joe is an interesting situation where it benefits the *least* from being part of one, but it also brings more to the table for other properties to use than any of the others do.

I have been reminded of This Garbage, which IS Nacelleverse-tier schlock. It's not "what would these ideas bring to a wider shared universe", it's pure Vessel For Introducing Brand.

And, like, no, MASK wasn't created by Hasbro, it was made by Kenner which Hasbro then ate - but it was clearly INSPIRED by GI Joe and Transformers. Was Biker Mice from Mars inspired by the Great Garloo, then?

There's not even any conceptual or creative lineage connecting them! The original toys were all created by different companies and none of them have anything to do with each other!

But is ANYONE enthused about the idea of these things crossing over with each other? With C.O.W.boys of Moo Mesa and the fucking Great Garloo? What do any of these individual properties get out of it?

And to clarify, I think the Nacelleverse sucks shit because, like so many of these initiatives, it's clearly "how do we make a shared universe of Things We Own". I can believe that somebody wanted to make a Biker Mice comic, sure. Sectaurs and RoboForce and Power Lords, at a push.

Transformers has always had room for human military guys and flashy supervillains, but once you introduce Transformers into the Joe setting it gets a bit harder to justify the robots not being involved in everything.

And it's funny, for all that GI Joe has been accused in the past of latching onto Transformers to maintain its relevance, I think TF benefits way more from having Joe in its world than the other way round.

They don't ever have to meet up, I just think it's neat if there's tiny aliens and army men and a space knight having adventures at the same time, existing in the same world, making it so the entire universe doesn't revolve around the robots.

I think Transformers is at its best when it's about one world intruding into another, so it's enhanced by just existing in a bigger world with Other Things Going On. People say it's other properties riding TF's coattails, and that's not INACCURATE, but I like it for what it brings *to Transformers*.

Been thinking about why I'm so fond of the Hasbroverse (both the IDW line and as a concept) while being so completely disdainful of other shared-universe bollocks like the Nacelleverse, and I think a big part is down to my Budianskian instincts?

Obviously this is impossible because Alan Moore looks like he's genetically a wizard, it's simply impossible to imagine what he would look like as a schoolboy oh there he is.
