🚨Paper alert!🚨 Across 5 expts, @mileritayar.bsky.social's new JEPG paper shows that people explicitly avoid switching between attention control states. Using demand selection tasks, we find that people don't just avoid cognitive conflict, but also switching between congruent and incongruent trials.

This is what I tell students: I am an immunologist, you are just learning this complex field. You will not recognize AI‘s circular lack of connected rationale & inability to specifically explain key data bc it sounds science-y. I will!! You lose points & ALSO circumvent actual learning! Lose-lose!

Interesting discussion of whether attention spans are decreasing. I have trouble with one argument, though: that lab tasks are necessarily a good measure of real-world attention. They are surely less messy, but they may not actually reflect real life www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Insightful: as with anything, enviromental context matters, we should be VERY judicious about the stimuli we exposue ourselves to. . .especially during goal-directed attention!
