Opposite-leaved Pondweed Groenlandia densa by the River Ems, Hampshire. Although not flowering, the last time this species was recorded on the Ems -1887- Queen Victoria had just been celebrating her Golden Jubilee.

Bryum bornholmense - a tuberous Bryum of heathy soils, in this case Odiham Common, N Hants. Tubers are amber coloured in incident light, and translucent with thin cell walls and barely protuberant cells in transmitted light. Has strong leaf margins with border cell walls approx 3 microns.

Opposite-leaved Pondweed Groenlandia densa just inside the vc11 boundary nr Emsworth, Hampshire today. First record for the River Ems corridor since 1887 it seems. Loads in a large garden pond linked to an Ems tributary and chalk springs. Woop-woop!

Brilliant to see the Great Grey Shrike at Shatterford in the New Forest today. Merlin, Dartford Warbler, Jay, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Marsh Tit were other highlights on a walk round from Denny Wood.

A good mix of autumn moths in the North Hampshire garden last night with 76 of 25. Palpita vitrealis was the only scarcer migrant. Max garden count of 11 Red-green Carpet was notable. Couldn't resist a photo session with this nicely marked Chestnut.

Another bat survey today in South-east Hants, exploring tunnels on Portsdown Hill. The highlights for me were another Tissue, Buttoned Snout and Bloxworth Snout. Also a dozen or so herald moths and over 50 peacock butterflies.

74/19 in SE Hants. Similar to last night, Diamond Back, RDP, Blair’s Mocha, 3 Turnip the probable migrants. Lesser YU was on the late side and a record 4 Sprawler was nice. Expired Nov Moth male next to trap. An unidentified Blastobasis could be best of rest along with 3 MdJ
