Neckera crispa growing as an epiphyte in a hazel temperate rainforest north of Cuilcagh, Co. Fermanagh. Other niceties include Ctenidium molluscum and Breutelia chrysocoma

I finally fulfilled my ambition to visit the famous Saihōji Moss Temple in Kyoto. The mosses were looking their best in the pouring rain. For once I had to resist studying them, and simply submit to their beauty.

The difference between habitat in the south (where I live) & the north is fascinating. Sphagnum palustre in Sussex is found in bogs & wet flushes with a supply of water from springs or streams. In Borrowdale, it is also at the top of this rocky mound; in the south, it doesn't rain enough for that.

Cummacatta Wood, just north of the Bowder Stone, has a wet flush with the gloriously red Sphagnum capillifolium (rare in Sussex) plus gone-over Bog Asphodel. It also has Juniper as well as Yew. First Juniper I've seen in Borrowdale; saw lots around Arnside on Limestone

Great spot for exploring yesterday in sna mám toirce. So many beautiful lichens and mosses (would be worth a trip for a lichenologist). One of the highlights was this beautiful Douinia ovata which looks to have last been recorded in Conamara (beanna beola) in 1965

Great to find the fungus Bryobroma scapaniae on Scapania undulata in Bannau Brycheiniog in Wales a few days ago. I think this is the third ever record of the species, and I see how it is very easy to miss, with the dark fruitbodies disguised against the black host stem. From a rock in a stream.

Micrograph of a rhizoid gall caused by a chytrid on Bryum moss. The infected cell contains several zoosporangia, some of which have thread-like exit tubes that release flagellated spores. Chytrids are interesting fungi that mostly lack hyphae and have mobile spores.
