Was expecting more, but I can’t grumble at 41/18 in SE Hants. Least Black Arches and Lesser Swallow Prominent both NFY. A nicely marked Clouded Drab made me think it was Lead Coloured for a second, Y. mucronella and a Diamond Back moth disturbed in the garden #teammoth

An afternoon to myself with no interruptions, so I did gen det. Phyllonorycter blancardella NFG + P. hostis. Blancardella was attracted to NIG (Pea Moth) lure + hostis to the trap, probably via the lure. @andydnunn.bsky.social just goes to show I know nothing about the moths in my garden! #teammoth

This week on the moth front, 2 NFG and a lot of NFY. Highlight was Grey Birch in 47/14 last night, last 10km over 25yrs ago. Adela reaumurella also NFG. Water Carpet, Powdered Quaker, E. Sulphurella, Pebble + Iron Prom and Maidens Blush all NFY. Psyche casta will not win any beauty awards #teammoth

Well not a right off, but it’s turning into a grind this year to get anything new into the moth traps. 22/12 in SE Hants with Silver Y the only NFY and species 54, which seems low. No micros yet again. Best of rest was a Pine Beauty and a nicely marked Lunar Marbled Brown #teammoth

Doubling down for the moths with some sacrifices to the gods of wine or moths. Found some garden raspberries in the freezer so daiquiris were made. Also a quaffer of a red. It seems that someone in advertising thinks that mothing and drinking may be a thing. What a silly idea 🤷🏻‍♂️ #teammoth

Very quiet for Firecrest this autumn, winter and spring, still good numbers of Goldcrest. First one in what feels like ages, and it usually is a regular garden visitor. More reassuringly I can still hear the little bleeders. Waterlooville area #hantbirds

112/14 in SE Hants last night. Mostly beige, but 2 NFY Angle Shade and Oak-tree Pug, which has is remarkably similar to Brindled Pug 🙄 I’m pretty sure 12 Early Grey and 14 Twin-spotted Quaker are garden records #teammoth

#mothfacefriday Yellow Horned, named because it has these erm, yellow horns. Not the most creative bunch the entomologists, especially when it comes to names 🙄

Beige overload, 159/17 in SE Hants. 99 CQ+SQ. 4 NFY 2x Common Plume, 5x Clouded Drab, 2 D. fagella, 1x Early Thorn. Others 4x Oak Beauty, 8 Yellow Horned, 9x Twin-spotted Quaker and a single Pammene giganteana in the trap. Nice variety in the markings of the Brindled Pug #teammoth

7 Buzzards in a thermal over the garden in Cowplain, I can’t remember ever seeing more here? Also 3 med gulls over at 6.40am whilst emptying the moth trap. Quite a few butterflies as well this pm, but no Firecrest this winter/spring. Hopefully not my hearing going 😖 #hantsbirds

The cloud cover and warmth arrived too late to rescue the trap numbers and variety, only 9 species in SE Hants and nothing new. The only micros were A. notana/ferrugana and Y. ustella. Of interest were some unusually marked common moths see alt text. That’s it for Feb I might do some stats #teammoth

After an epically 💩 16hrs, I finally got to complete the moths. 126/12 with only 99 Orthosia trapped last night, though I didn’t get a chance for a second look around. 1 NFY Beautiful Plume. Darker variant of Brindled Pug reminding me that there’s all the melanistic Puggery on the way #teammoth

155/14 last night in SE Hants. 122 were Common Beige. NFY of Small Beige, Grey Shoulder-knot, Twin-spotted Quaker, A. hastiana, Brindled Pug and maybe Dark Chestnut. Mini Merv and 3 Oak Beauty to break up the monopoly of beige. #teammoth
