Well almost a first for Hants, the Anarsia has been confirmed as a male lineatella by dissection. The first and only record to date was in 1971, and reared through from an imported Spanish plum. I did bottle it and got my friend Richard to do the gen det work! #teammoth

Looks a better night than last already, a lot of moths on the wing including this brute of a Blastobasis lacticolella. The Anarsia has been downgraded as it’s not clear which one. Thoughts welcome but it looks like a chop job 🪓 #teammoth

67/21 in SE Hants last night. Nothing by 10.45pm so was dreading a visit from Sir Terry! 4 NFY Brindled Green, Feathered Ranunculus, Green-brindled Crested and Frosted Orange (the first since 2023). I forgot I’d potted a house moth yesterday, looks like a NFG Anarsia spartiella #teammoth

Not often a spider grabs my attention but this one was big and brightly coloured. I think it’s a Four-spotted Orbweaver but these are not my specialty! Seen in SE Hants at the driving range. Safely removed to a grassy area #spiders

Unfortunately there isn’t enough interest to book a Hants moth day for next year. However, quite a few have asked about running trap nights. In Feb we should try and get some locations and dates together to meet up. this might lead to further trap nights + a county moth day in the future #teammoth

181/48 in SE Hants. Best was a Vestal with other common migrants, 3 Rush Veneer, 1 Rhubarb, 1 L-album, 2 Clancy’s, 11 Four Spotted, 3 Blair’s. Unusual moths, as in very late were Small Yellow Wave and a Blackneck. Box Moth numbers have rebounded this year with 10 overnight. #teammoth #migrantmothuk

Given it’s blowing an absolute hooley outside, I was surprised to see a Hummingbird Hawk-moth on the Salvia. What amazing little flyers they are! Obviously a sign to put the trap out tonight #teammoth

Better pics + final count for the 06/09/2025 was 142/55 in 2 traps in SE Hants. NFG was Morophaga choragella, I suspect I’ve overlooked this one, a very good caddisfly mimic. The second moth I think is the 2nd garden record of Elachista stabilella. I’ll leave this one to the experts #teammoth

Good to be back garden trapping, though I’m still missing a bit of my moth mojo. Provisionally 113/43 with a fridge full of micros still to go through down in SE Hants. Morophaga choragella NFG and I suspect the Elachista is as well but will be a 🪓. Some of the common migrants also present #teammoth

Another disappointing trap in Cornwall of 16/11. Highlight was an Old Lady. Total moths in 4 nights of trapping was 74/38. A real shame as this site definitely has the potential to do well, but even location can’t beat the weather. Cool and heavy showers all night #teammoth

Not the best preparation, standing + drinking for 5hrs in a field with 70k others. 133/52 in SE Hants some micros to ID. Nothing new so far, Rush Veneer, O. semirubella and 3 Four-spotted probable migrants. Best of was a 2nd record of Nutmeg + fresh L-album. Pygmy Pine Carpet was unusual #teammoth

Two head scratchers and both a bit worn. First is a Celypha, ObsID is certain it’s rufana I’m thinking rosaceana. Pretty much a Hants first if it’s rufana. The second is a Blastobasis, I’m thinking vittata as it’s not like the rebeli I get. ObsID as always says phycidella 🤣 Thoughts #teammoth

Moths stats time July 2025 SE Hants VC11. Only 9 traps run (gutted), 2789 moths, 84 NFY, 19 NFG. Running totals for 2025 of 9583 moths, 548 species to date and 78 NFG! Star moth was easy, Striped Hawk-moth, with Grass Emerald, Flame neb and Argyresthia ivella as runners up #teammoth

Another nail in the mothing coffin, the stand of Silver Birch near next door is being chopped down. Nothing wrong with them and that’s where the Orange Underwing were seen. It seems to be a relentless assault on nature at the minute #teammoth 🤬

A cool night reduced numbers to 113/52 in SE Hants VC11. NFY was a Portland Ribbon Wave and NFG was Aroga velocella and the Scrobipalpa ocellatella from the other night. 3 RDP, 1 Four-spotted Footman, 2 O. semirubella, 1 European Corn-borer hinted at migrants on the loose #migrantmothuk #teammoth

Relatively quiet trap last night in SE Hants VC11 with 154/75. A few migrants, best of which was 2 Small Mottled Willow. One NFG Scrobipalpa ocellatella (very uncooperative). NFY Old Lady (very old) and Y. sequella #teammoth

Last nights tally was a nice 190/74. A lot of common migrants including C. amplana NFY. 6 O. semirubella is a garden record and 3 Light Crimson Underwings is a joint best. 2 probable NFGs Mompha propinquella and Gynnidomorpha vectisana both needing further work to confirm IDs #teammoth

A better picture of the Mompha and now I’ve added the small Tortrix that also has me stumped. Any help appreciated #teammoth

It’s taken years to attract the green woodpeckers back onto the lawn but it finally happened! No herbicides or pesticide + hand removal of any unwanted plants, keeping the grass relatively short to encourage the birds in. Plenty of ants nests and leatherjackets for the starlings as well #hantsbirds

I know I provisionally have ID’d this as Dark Crimson and Obsid agrees, but I think what’s left of this moth is a dark coloured Red Underwing. Thoughts? @lesevanshill.bsky.social #teammoth

A bit of an odd moth trap in SE Hants last night, provisionally 156/70. Highlight was the hornet that crawled halfway up my arm without 🐝 me. Unfortunately the underwing it dismembered wasn’t so lucky. A possible Jersey Mocha was best of. A fridge full of twitchy micros still to sort out. #teammoth
