No trapping last night, but a couple of Shoulder Stripe on the wildlife centre door at Carsington this morning. There's an outside chance that tomorrow night might be doable 🤞🤞

A fairly predictable result from the garden last night with just 5/3. Given that other Derbyshire moth-ers were trapping decent numbers I'll be off out into better habitat tonight.

Thoughts on this please people. Found inside bird hide at Carsington this morning. Obsidentify suggests Mompha jurassicella which would be a good record for here (gen det required obviously).

Last night's Satellite. The only other adult moth was an Agonopterix heracliana/ciliella agg, and there was a now obligatory Scarlet Tiger caterpillar on the fence.

I ran 2 traps in the garden last night which yielded just a single Agonopterix h/c and a Scarlet Tiger caterpillar by dawn. A post birding discovery of a Dotted Borde midway between the traps was a nice surprise. Also 3 Pale Brindled Beauty on the visitor centre exterior at Carsington.

I spent a short while looking for Luffia lapidella cases in a local graveyard this afternoon. Unfortunately I didn't find any, but did find this larva which I think is Marbled Beauty?

Some fairly heavy rain probably scuppered things last night, but at least the Irish man was kept at bay with a single Agonopterix heracliana/ciliella nfy. Jan stats: 6 traps, 3 Wogans, 3 moths of 3 species

Last night's Pale Brindled Beauty appears to be my earliest record here.

I don't get many, but that's probably down to lack of trapping opportunities as much as anything.

Spurred on by the incredible sighting of a Swallow at Carsington yesterday I thought I'd have a go last night. Ever willing to punish the over-optimistic, the canny Wogan seized his chance. Lesson learned? Probably not 🙄

A few stats for 2025. 12,341 moths processed (excluding abundant micro species such as Yponomeuta and Acentria ephemerella) VC57- 521 species recorded. Garden- 460 species recorded. A couple of new species recorded elsewhere, namely Dwarf Cream Wave and Clancy's Rustic.

7 moths of 4 species last night in VC57. The weather is too grim to take photos 🌧🌧🌧. December Moth 4, Scarce Umber, E postvittana and B lacticolella. Lurker patrol is likely cancelled 😏

A snap decision to run last night actually paid off for once. Despite steady rain until midnight, a very reasonable 20/6 made it worthwhile. Target moth was Scarce Umber and it duly obliged. Also, 9 Mottled Umber (must be a record here), 4 Red-green C, Winter Moth and 4 LBAM.

A night of attrition against the dark meteorological forces, and a power cut, produced a dismal 6/5. White-point, Mottled Umber (different individual), Juniper C, a late Straw Dot, and 2 E postvittana.

I'm only running the MV tonight (actinic is still on the roof and I just couldn't face climbing). Conditions look better with a little drizzle and no sign of the moon currently. Just one moth so far but it's the 3rd garden record of White-point.

A new moth for me last night with this Streak. Scarce in VC57 in recent years, and probably not on the radar (also larger than I envisaged). A late Green Brindled Crescent, 2 Red-line Quaker, another Brick amongst the usual Red-green Carpets.

Lurker alert ⚠️. White-point hiding on a disused bird feeder. New for the garden year list (2nd ever here). Also Red-line Quaker in the leaf litter.

White-point will need some cooling off for photos, in my limited experience.

12/6 last night (wet again). I'm fairly happy with Northern Winter Moth nfy, Feathers McThorn 4, Epirrita agg, Common Marbled Carpet 2, Red-green Carpet 3 and Juniper Carpet. The NWM had forewing length 16.5mm which is within range. More wasps than all year and a Smooth Newt 🙂

The area to watch tonight is just ahead and behind the cold front as it pushes east this evening and overnight, when the wind will drop briefly for an hour or two. It will remain fairly windy on the coast. Western and more inland spots perhaps more likely to see any migrant activity.
