I, a middle-aged white guy with an Ivy-league PhD, was also unable to get a job in academia. Because there are almost no jobs, and a ridiculously talented and growing pool of people applying for them.

It has been nearly 15 years since our campus issued us with ID numbers so we would stop using our SS numbers as such. I still don't have it memorized and must look it up every time I need to fill in a form. I think I'm in denial about the utility of this number and its function in my life.

The only way this is hugging the third rail is if we all collectively decide the truth is going out of fashion. We need to a) advocate for hiring and find creative ways to fund lines even in the face of systemic resistance, and b) value and recognize the incredible work our precarious colleagues.
