Funding for safety net hospitals and support for people who are homeless or awaiting trial could be covered just by reducing Gov. Pritzker's proposed $ increase for state prisons. Especially notable as he could reduce the population of IDOC (and IDJJ) and close empty prison space with a penstroke.

Part of the dynamic here is that surveillance systems are too readily accepted as a cheaper alternative to larger necessary investments in public safety infrastructure, like better housing, healthcare, and safer, more well-designed roads for pedestrians and children.

this is definitely a huge problem in Chicago too. the queer job board I run is full of people moving up here for safety who are then unable to find work or cheap housing and the community just canât support them all. itâs BAD

1. Caste. Most people in the west donât understand that the waves of engineers and doctors who immigrated out of India in the 70s and onwards were âhighâ caste folks, who resented the Indian equivalent of affirmative action for caste. Caste solidarity is very powerfulâŠ/

Thankfully the block button is easy to access but it's still wild to me that there is a certain subset of online liberals that genuinely are like "genocide wasn't actually a problem and saying that it was is why voting rights were taken away". The failure of solidarity is breathtaking

Hereâs another thing folks might not know, a truck does about 10,000 times the damage to a road than a car does.

"1. Lift the ban on rent control so cities can stabilize rents. 2. Invest directly in affordable housing at the scale the crisis demands. 3. Support cooperative and social housing models that remove profit from housing." None of those are incompatible with the BUILD plan or inclusionary zoning.

Anybody who lives on the North Side of Chicago knows yesterday was an abject failure on the part of the city to coordinate a large event. I encourage everyone to contact their alder, the City Councilâs Police and Fire committee (chaired by Ald. Taliaferro), and attend their next CAPS meeting.
