This war-themed issue of Reckoning, IT WAS PARADISE, was a long time in the making, but sadly evergreen in its relevance. I'm honored have a science fiction story here that keeps the focus on the human beings, struggling to survive a war machine that seems to have no face, ideology, or objectives.

My science fiction story is about a father trying to give his young daughter her heart's desire, in a landscape of desperation and mechanized horrors. So, technically this was my second sale, but first (fiction) publication. It's not often I get to publish stories with the entire species for protagonist, and rather like the view from the top 😇 As to the title, I have an engineer's rigorous mathematical grounding to blame!

This was a lot of fun to write. Dissecting human relationships is endlessly fascinating, more so those not often depicted. Humanity in all of its endless permutations. As always, @emmiechristie33.bsky.social gets it! Thanks to @translunartl.bsky.social for giving it a home.

Getting lost in a massive Sydney hospital past midnight inspired the kernel of this piece. Not an experience I'd recommend! I'm humbled to read @emmiechristie33.bsky.social's take on this piece, and grateful to @sarahijackson.bsky.social & @innerworlds.bsky.social for giving it a home!

This was so difficult to write, and a few times I had to back off and redraft. Though couched in the terms of substance dependence, it's about isolation that has nothing to do with others. Something that @emmiechristie33.bsky.social completely gets (of course!) in this penetrating read.

This is my rebuttal of the worn-out lure that the next transformative technology is the one to finally usher in an age of plenty for all. It didn't happen with fire, or iron, or steam, or information, because the barrier was never technological. How can the fix be?

Seeing the world through the eyes of a child is something I keep going back to. A perspective free of the social and cognitive accretions of a 'well-trained' adult. @emmiechristie33.bsky.social, as usual, cuts to the heart of what it's all about. 🎉🙏

I'm genuinely in awe of @emmiechristie33.bsky.social's eye for detail and keen sense for reading between the lines, picking up on things left intentionally under the surface, and often overlooked by most others. At this point, I'm not sure which is the better read, the story, or this review!
