IMO one explanation for the vibecession is that we’re finally fed up with that deal and ready to make a different one. But that sentiment is front running economic reality.

In fact many economists would argue this is the bargain Americans keep making: cheaper stuff in exchange for continuing or increasing precarity. Most other countries use excess productivity to expand their safety nets or labor power, we use it to make TVs cheaper.

There is a potentially interesting divergence here between interpersonal bigotry and hierarchical values but yes. A lot of conservatives are extremely nice to people below them in the hierarchy as long as they don't step out of line.

People spent their whole lives fighting for the end of this era. People *died* for this. and we are allowing it to be rolled back without so much as a whimper.

A lot of naive materialists tend to go wrong here because they miss that many people materially harmed by that system nonetheless preferred it to a more equal system where they would no longer get to be dominant over someone.

Importantly, the internet in its current iteration is absolutely not designed to foster deep connections like that.

I've been saying for a while that we don't have social media- we have parasocial media. We have media that flattens other humans into caricatures - into "content" to be consumed. We have media that presents us with a facsimile of community, as opposed to the real thing.

Yeah, I suspect a not insubstantial part of this comes down to people not understanding what the modern American socioeconomic structure actually looks like, PMCs probably outnumber farmers and factory workers at this point, the proletariat is more likely to be in healthcare than a factory today.
