If you are curious about what atproto is, what a PDS is, or what moving to a new PDS looks like. This may be a good starting place for you. This is my attempt at explaining some of the basics of Bluesky(atproto) in a less technical way.

Lot's of new PDS Admins/Operators this week. Wanted to give a shout out that there is a channel on the ATProto Touchers discord #pds-operators where we talk about running a PDS and help anyone with issues.

i get tired by “oh no bsky controls 99.999% of everything” because imo that’s significantly a community-building problem and we don’t have data to know if it’s something architecturally inherent or more about fast growth dynamics

This post would be fine if it was more obvious to the less tech savvy how ATProto works. To many Bluesky IS the protocol. They don't know there are other options. The team could do a lot more in educating and showing people how the tech and federation work.

just a reminder to people wanting to move away from bsky related infra, you don't _need_ to host every part of the stack. when setting up your PDS you can specify a different relay or different set of relays in the .env file for example (more here: compare.hose.cam)

kinda unfortunate that a lot of people are going to write off the atprotocol as a result of recent actions by bsky moderation lol. they rightfully should but in a way it kinda diminishes a lot of the work ppl have done so far
