We just reached 40 000 custom feeds on Bluesky! 🎉 If you're interested in self-hosting a SkyFeed-compatible feed engine (it's open-source), send me a message and we'll get it set up! It would be great to diversify the ecosystem :) These are the 16 most-used feed generators currently on the network:

90% of SkyFeed feed requests are now served in 24 milliseconds or less, with only about 1% of requests taking 4 seconds or more. And after adding protection against recursive "feed bombs" today (feeds using themselves as an input), over 99.9% of requests now return with a HTTP 200 OK status code!

My shiny new database server ran out of file descriptors because I only set higher limits for users when setting it up, but the DB runs as a systemd service (which has different limits). As a result, some SkyFeed feeds were stuck on old state for up to 6 hours. Sorry about that, should be fixed now!

You may have noticed that SkyFeed is a bit unreliable at times. This is caused by a small number of feeds being extremely slow and blocking the data structures. I'm trying to fix this with some Rust magic, but please also verify that your feeds take less than 10 seconds to generate in the Builder!

I just found and fixed a bug which caused all feeds using "single user" inputs or any type of "list" (input, remove) blocks to fail. If your feed was broken for the last few hours, please check again - there's a good chance it's fixed now!

All SkyFeed feeds are now back online, thanks for your patience! The feed generator backend is now serving 120 feed requests/second :O New posts might still be a bit delayed, please reply to this post if your feed is having other issues.

The SkyFeed infrastructure is a bit overloaded, I am currently working on setting up a new query engine server and redirecting some of the traffic there. So everything should be back to normal in about 1 to 2 hours, thanks for your patience!

Hey feed builders, Bluesky started rejecting non-UTC-timestamps for new records today (good change!) and SkyFeed had a bug where it did not convert the timestamp when publishing feeds. This is fixed now, so it should be possible again to publish and update feeds!

Due to a small bug in the indexer, lists created using the List Architect (see embed) could not be used as inputs/removes in the SkyFeed Builder. This is now fixed, but you might need to re-create the lists for them to work.

Hey SkyFeed users, please make sure your app is on version v0.8.3 or later (written in the top left). This release fixes a security vulnerability which could lead to someone stealing your session if they tricked you into clicking a maliciously crafted link. Not exploited in the wild yet afaik!

The Discover feed is back online! Still a bit experimental, so please let me know if it doesn't load for you. Also, the OnlyPosts and Mutuals feeds have been moved to new infrastructure and now use the same query engine as the more than 15 000 custom feeds published using the SkyFeed Builder!

All SkyFeed feeds except Discover should be back online now! Unfortunately that specific feed is extremely resource-hungry on the new infrastructure, so it needs some major optimizations before I can turn it on again. Thanks for your patience 💙

So repo v3 broke some skyfeed infrastructure, I fixed the newest DB instance so all of the custom feeds you made using the builder should be back online+working. other feeds like Mutuals will be stuck until tomorrow because it's harder to fix them (old infra) and I really need to sleep now (UTC+2)

The SkyFeed Builder shows how long your blocks take to execute. Query times up to 500ms are great, even 2 seconds are still ok. But if your massive RegEx takes 30+ seconds, please don't publish it! This only applies to a very small number of feeds, but it degrades the performance for all users :(

🎉 We just reached 10,000 custom feeds on Bluesky! They are one of the most unique features of this network and a key driving force for discovery and communities. 87% of all feeds were created using the SkyFeed Builder, which also means that their internal algorithm is public and transparent.

Some feed builders seem to be using 100+ individual inverted RegEx blocks in their feeds which is causing massive performance issues. It's possible to do exactly the same thing with only ONE normal and ONE inverted RegEx block with pipe | symbols. Please optimize your feeds, ping me if you need help

Hey feed builders, I just updated the query engine. Should be more stable, new posts appear faster and max. post history for single user inputs! I tested the top 100 feeds, but the architecture changes could cause your feed to stop working. If that's the case, reply to this post so I can debug it!

The SkyFeed feed generator is now hosted on fly.io with Dragonfly DB and running great! It's responsible for pagination (scrolling down a feed) and caching feeds to reduce load on the query engine itself. The engine will be updated tomorrow with unlimited post history for single user inputs!

The skyfeed builder feeds were down twice in the last 24h (~ 15 mins). This was caused by an out-of-memory kill of the query engine. I'm setting up a new 128 GB RAM root server and optimizing the structure of the DB to prevent this in the future!
