Viola Liuzzo is a personal hero of mine. She was a Unitarian Universalist, and I got to meet some of her daughters at the UU events for the 50th anniversary Selma March. She’s an example of empathy at scale: caring about others because you know your wellbeing is bound up with everyone’s.

I can’t help seeing parallels between the murders of Viola Liuzzo and Renee Good. Two young mothers supporting just causes, confronted and intimidated by white supremacists - then when they tried to get away from their harassers, shot in the head in their cars.

My first thoughts were Viola Liuzzo and James Reeb, the latter of which, of course, did a lot to bring the Civil Rights Movement to national consciousness, because he was white.

There are so many parallels between then and now. On March 25, 1965, Viola Liuzzo was shot dead by three Klan members while driving civil rights activists to a march. On January 7, 2025, Renee Nicole Good was shot dead by ICE thugs as she was warning neighbors of ICE presence.
