A tragic, false narrative of racial difference was created in America that has resulted in centuries of racial bigotry and injustice. The Legacy Museum traces the evolution of this dehumanizing myth from our nation’s founding to today.

The National Memorial For Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, is the nation's first comprehensive memorial dedicated to the legacy of Black Americans who were enslaved, terrorized by lynching, humiliated by racial segregation, and presumed guilty and dangerous.

Last week we announced the phase one opening of Elevation in Montgomery, Alabama. Elevation is a research center, convening space, art gallery, and theater with overnight accommodations which was designed to complement and enrich the experience for anyone coming to visit our Legacy Sites.

“The Caring Hand,” by Eva Oertli and Beat Huber, at Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. The sculpture park uses art and historical artifacts to provide a unique view into the lives and legacies of enslaved people.

This original dwelling that enslaved people lived in is one of two structures transported from an Alabama cotton plantation to Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. Built in 1860, the dwellings are among only a handful that have been preserved.

For over three centuries of slavery in the U.S., enslaved Black people were denied full autonomy over their own names. In the first census after Emancipation—the 1870 census—newly emancipated Black Americans were finally able to express their freedom by adopting surnames that were recorded.
