No they simply do not. The markup is negligible if existent and the convenience is great. Both from my point of view and I’m sure from the point of view of maintaining compliance with funding agencies. If I would have to guess I would say it decreases admin cost. This paper is a case study at best.

This essay should not be published by scientific journal. It's just lazy anecdotes. If Brain wants to cover this topic area, they should get a labor economist. There's tons of good work in this field. When scientific journals publish this, they empower DOGE to come cut indirect costs.

Trying to run a university department without skilled administrative support staff is like trying to run a football club with only the players.
