Happening now: several hundred people are pouring into Chicago's downtown Federal Plaza. It's 25 degrees outside. Organizers are leading the crowd in a chant of, "no boots on the ground, no bombs in the air!" Two protesters hold a large banner reading, "no war for Venezuela oil."

Unconstitutional force. Civilians dead. Congress bypassed. Oil interests front and center. We’ve seen this movie before and it ends in blood. But we don’t have to do it again.

A civilized country spends money on Education not bombs and war. We are no longer a civilized country.

Trump is dragging us into another endless war with Venezuela. We’ve seen this before. I campaigned for Obama because I opposed endless war in Iraq and I oppose any reckless approach that puts our troops in harms way. Both parties must demand accountability now.

Trump needs a distraction from a failing economy, and that failure is on him. Instead of investing here at home to lower the cost of rent, food, and healthcare, we're talking about spending billions to secure oil fields in a foreign country.

That one person can drag us into a war without consulting or even notifying Congress, or our allies, or fully explaining to the American people why this is necessary, is absolutely bonkers. Reminder that Congress has the power to stop all of this. Where the hell are they?

The challenges we now face must be met by a bold progressive populist movement that strengthens democracy and shakes up the system. We can’t simply return to the path we were on before Trump. We cannot accept the status quo of Big Money dominating our politics and economy.

Remember: If we allow ourselves to fall into fatalism, or wallow in disappointment, or become resigned to what is rather than what should be, we will lose the long game. The greatest enemy of positive social change is cynicism about what can be changed.
