Tangential to the point, but it bugs me that pop culture always shows bookish kids reading old classics. I was a stone cold certified bookworm. I read Choose Your Own Adventure. Newbery books, but 90s ones not 50s. Time travel, dragons, puzzle mysteries, neighborhood hijinks. Readers read FOR FUN!

I think the best book to give a young reader is the book you think *they* are going to genuinely like. With fiction, I firmly believe focusing on reading great books is less important than becoming a person who thinks of reading as pleasurable.

If you like a publication and can afford to, subscribe to it. If you can’t, consider asking your library to make it available to you. And make sure your members of Congress know you support federal funding for libraries. And so on.
