DNA samples were taken of the 4 Poole Peregrine chicks at the time of ringing. Samples are known as buccal swabs, akin to a saliva swab. These will be sent to the Raptor Forensic DNA Project based in Edinburgh and used to assist possible persecution/theft cases.

A bad year for terns... first the gbbgs, now the ravens taking 2-3 eggs every 10 mins. It's all part of the natural ebb and flow of breeding seasons but it's still hard to watch 😫

Pretty sure all 4 eggs at Poole Peregrines hatched. Tricky with occasional stills and what looks like one ball of white fluff! More egg shell appeared this morning at 0700. Nice, full house! Classic falcon hatching strategy with one delayed as a 'gamble'..will survive if super strong or lots of food

Wareham heronry looking a little depleted this year currently down 9 nests on last year, though 1 nest already fledged and some still building. The productivity of this heronry has increased steadily in the last 5 years, perhaps the wet winter has played a part.

Things came to a head at the Poole peregrines nest site 11th March. The juvenile male (HG) attacked the adult male (his father). They scrapped for a few minutes then the juvenile fled and hasn't been seen in the box since. Time for HG to make his own way.

Checking up on local nest box cameras the other day I came across something I have not seen before in ~30 years of monitoring barn owl boxes....a tawny owl in a box with a pair of barn owls! Thankfully a couple of days later the barn owls were still present and the tawny owl had moved on.

Incredible news! In 2022 The first chick to fledge for 180 years in the South of England was female ‘5H1’. Last year she raised 3 of her own chicks near Rutland including 8R3, which our team ringed. 8R3 was just seen in the Gambia by Fansu Bojang. Great to see 3rd generation Ospreys now thriving!

We've managed to read the BTO ring number of the adult female from this years' live hobby nest camera. EZ92156. Ringed by DRSG in 2019 as a chick at another F.E. site 8.5 miles away. To think she will have travelled at least 50,000 miles migrating alone!
