Donald and I are trying to move into a larger house in 2026 because rents are (really!) going down in LA so my new kink is LANDLORD HUMBLING where I watch on zillow as they lower the rent for their overpriced ADU garages with no yards week after week, month after month, and still no one wants them.

This is one of my favorite Dean Cornwell paintings. It's a masterclass in composition, storytelling and 1st, 2nd and 3rd reads, but also it has an incredible sense of dark humor (THE BUTTS) which Dean Cornwell didn't often get to showcase.

I love painting clouds almost as much as I love painting rocks even though in some ways they are kind of inverse techniques, but still very zen, v Bob Ross, v Jazz saxophone solo.

When I do portfolio reviews for people interested in illustration this is the #1 thing I find many artists lacking in their work. I've seen a lot of portfolios full of what I loosely call "social media show and tell." Just kind of straightforward, OC portrait art w zero storytelling, zero mystery.

The very first lecture I had at art school, told us that we weren't there to learn to make beautiful images. We were there to learn to communicate ideas. (That could sometimes be beautiful but also not.) If we wanted to make "soulless beauty" we were pointed to the door. This was 20 years ago.
