I went on a bit of a journey within the Chicago Manual of Style to find what it says about writing thoughts. It’s 12.49 in the 18th edition. I found it in the index under “interior monologues,” yet 12.49 is labeled “unspoken discourse” (which is not in the index).

The best writing advice I've ever been given is to keep a list of crutch words to check for every time you revise a chapter. Include the obvious ones like just, really, and very, but know your personal ones, too! For me, it's little and only!
