OpenAI is a menace. Two recent stories make that clearer than ever. One day you have Sam Altman denigrating humanity to defend AI. The next, WSJ reveals OpenAI could have alerted Canadian police of a potential mass shooter, but refused pressure from employees. That person went on to kill 8 people.

Not sure how I feel about the Americans taking advantage of the fact that their white uniforms apparently make them invisible to the referees

OpenAI employees pushed for the company to inform Canadian police about a user they thought would engage in real-world violence months before the person did just that, killing eight people in a horrific attack in Tumbler Ridge. The company only reached out to police after the shooting had occurred.

Canada’s AI minister says he’s “deeply disturbed” by the reports and has reached out to OpenAI about their safety protocols. This should finally push the government to take action on the harms of generative AI, but I don’t have high hopes when the minister is so deep in the industry’s pocket.

It’s funny to hear this report list all the ways Chinese data collection could be a threat when the US does the same things and poses a much greater threat given Trump’s 51st state comments. There’s only a brief acknowledgement at the end that the US isn’t trustworthy either.

Quite frankly, it’s outrageous that Mark Carney is cutting Statistics Canada. If he was Stephen Harper or Pierre Poilievre, I feel like this would be getting a lot more backlash. Carney of all people should know the importance of high-quality data and information about the country.
