The Thwaites Glacier collapse is really a ‘when’ question, not an ‘if’. Estimates had it collapsing by the 23rd century (within 200 years), but could be much sooner if its demise is accelerating.

1/ Paul Ehrlich died this week at 93. The takes split into hagiography and dismissal. But the interesting question isn't whether he got it right, he didn't, it's why he got it wrong, and who was asking the right questions instead 🧵

If you haven’t watched this before, you really should. The brilliant Dr. Carl Sagan testifying before the United States Congress in 1985 on #ClimateChange. We should have listened then. Will we now? Remember, climate change isn’t an on & off switch. It’s an exponential dial. We’re making it worse.

And there's a darker legacy. Figures like John Tanton took population concerns and fused them with nativism. "Too many people" became "too many of the wrong people." Ehrlich himself sat on the board of FAIR until 2003. Anti-immigration activists capitalized on anxiety about overpopulation.

But population politics also helped split the movement. Debates over overpopulation drove a wedge between social ecology (Murray Bookchin) and deep ecology (Dave Foreman, Earth First!). It was one of the most consequential fractures in radical environmentalism.

Paul Ehrlich has died. His 1968 book,The Population Bomb, is mostly remembered for predictions that didn't pan out. But its influence on the radical environmental movement is underappreciated. A thread on Ehrlich's complicated legacy from my interviews with current and former eco-activists.
