Ka Ni Kanichihk: It is so exciting to see the new Ka Ni Kanichihk building in action. I’m so honoured to have worked with so many hard working community members to bring in the federal funding for this new space.

I returned from Ottawa earlier this week and was surprised with this beautiful card that community members had dropped off in my office! This card is hand coloured in, and is signed by many of the amazing folks fighting for a free Palestine in Winnipeg.

Today on Red Umbrella Day we’re reminded of the urgent need to end violence against sex workers. All too often the human rights abuses they face are ignored, especially for those who are Indigenous, radicalized, 2SLGBTQIA+ or live with a disability.

Today marks 10 years since the release of the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, an invaluable record of the crimes and injustices committed through the residential school system.

Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day to reaffirm the rights of persons with disabilities - rights that are outlined in the Charter, and the Canadian Human Rights Act. These constitutional rights are all too often violated or disregarded.

I had a blast with my friends at Eadha Co-Op last week chatting, sharing food with our community and dreaming of more humane community spaces like this one. Eadha Bakery is a worker co-op. I love this bakery, especially because Eadha has rooted their business practices in human rights and dignity.

I joined many constituents this morning outside of the Minto Armoury to honour veterans. Let us honour them through committing to peace. I recommit to ensuring that all veterans that call Winnipeg Centre home are treated with the dignity, love and respect they deserve.

This afternoon I met with Sister Laura Vicuña Pereira Manso, an Indigenous land defender from Brazil, in my constituency office to talk about the shared experiences of Indigenous peoples across the world with harmful systems of colonialism, misogyny and deterioration of our rights.

Indigenous Veterans Day was established in Winnipeg more than twenty years ago to honour the service of Indigenous veterans who made great sacrifices but were denied the same care, and respect as non-Indigenous veterans. We must ensure that Indigenous veterans live with the dignity they deserve.

I had an energizing Sunday morning discussing progressive priorities during the @ccpamb.bsky.social Brunch. I was honoured to sit with the National Farmers Union and talk about their commitment to building relationships with workers, united in the need for democracy and just food systems.

It’s alarming hearing the Prime Minister talk about “sacrifices” in the budget when the Liberals have repeatedly sacrificed the safety of Indigenous women and girls. Will the government finally put Indigenous women’s safety before corporate profits in this year’s budget?

Today I will be reintroducing my bill that aims to address residential school denialism. We must uphold the dignity and safety of survivors, families and communities.
