The loss of two innocent children in Kitigan Zibi leaves me without words. This news is devastating for all community members, and my heart goes out to everyone who has been impacted.

I express again my heartbreak about the tragedy at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in BC. I reiterate that my love goes out to all students, families, teachers, frontline workers, friends and community members impacted.

The NDP must be a party that defends and upholds the international rules-based order. At a time of rapidly rising authoritarianism, fascism and international violence, NDP voices in Parliament must hold the government accountable for ensuring international law is upheld.

Today, Main Street Project is able to resume shelter operations after the Manwin Hotel fire on Wednesday. Unfortunately, MSP’s other building with their offices, food bank and donation hub is extensively damaged and will be closed until further notice.

Yesterday morning, a fire broke out at the Manwin Hotel on Main Street, located beside the Main Street Project's emergency shelter. The fire resulted in 150 people evacuating the shelter, and MSP is expecting severe losses. (1/3)

Today I wrote to several Liberal Ministers urging immediate action to uphold the safety and dignity of Pimicikamak evacuees in Winnipeg.

Today I want to thank some of the local community heroes who have stepped up with huge donations to support the evacuees from Pimicikamak: Kelly Ryback, a retiree who volunteers with Agape Table; Matt Davidson from Spirit Horse; William Hudson, Lawrence spatch Mulhall and Bre from Linking Hope.

There are over 4,000 evacuees from Pimichikamak as a result of the power failure and government inaction. Many of these folks have been evacuated to Winnipeg Centre and need our support.

The Liberal government claims that Pimicikamak is currently transitioning to a recovery phase. This does not align with the reality on the ground.

The rise of far right extremist violence is a warning sign of the global erosion of human rights and international law. Since Donald Trump’s election, we have seen relentless attacks on DEI initiatives, LGBTQ+ people, faith based communities, and racialized communities.

Before the December 28th power outage, Pimichikamak Cree Nation was facing challenges with its water and sewage infrastructure. This issue has been exacerbated since the power outage.

Homes in Pimichikamak have been severely damaged as a result of pipes freezing and bursting. This includes sewage pipes. Eva Muswaggon shared with me how her house was contaminated with raw sewage after the sewage line froze.

Councillor Shirley Robinson is with Janet McKay, who is overseeing the emergency response centre on Pimicikamak Territory. Although hydro was restored today, the community still does not have adequate access to food, water, heat or safe homes.

Councillor Muswaggon says that while hydro has finally been restored to Pimichikamak Territory, the damage has already been done. Army intervention is needed to fix water and sewer infrastructure, ranging from water and sewer mains and treatment plants, as well as service lines to houses.

The Liberal government must ensure the dignity and safety of all people of Pimicikimak, whether in the nation itself or with evacuees who end up in Winnipeg.

As a result of 11 days of inaction by the Liberal government, Chief Monias and Councillor Muswaggon show us the burst pipes in their water plant that occurred as a result of the Manitoba Hydro power outage.

I heed Minister Lisa Naylor's request for the federal government to call in the army to help with Pimicikamak Cree Nation's power recovery. Pimicikamak Okimawin declared a state of emergency ten days ago, on December 28th, after Manitoba Hydro was cut off due to mechanical failures in -20 weather.

As the New Year begins and the NDP leadership race ramps up, the central question is not nostalgia. It is renewal. How do we rebuild the NDP so that it is rooted in its history but brave enough to meet this moment? (🧵 1/8)
