New paper in Nature. The more a government controls its domestic media, the more it dominates AI training data, the more pro-regime outputs we get from AI. By scraping the open web, LLMs are unwittingly laundering state-coordinated narratives into seemingly objective answers.

I've been trying to verbalize this sentiment for a while now and this comparison hit the nail right on the head. The technology won't go away, but it seems hard to believe that the current pervasiveness will be the steady state we settle into.

I am sure it varies wildly by discipline, but I haven not met anyone IRL doing quantitative political science that is strongly against using AI.

The first supersonic passenger aircraft launched in 1968. I still haven't flown in one. Just because technology exists doesn't mean that it will be scalable for the mass public. I wonder if this how AI will develop.

It's a good example of how the V-Dem MM deals with experts with varying reliability and different levels of DIF - since the expert diverged substantially from the other experts their contribution to the overall estimate was substantially downweighted. doi.org/10.1017/pan....
