The financial crisis of the HE sector in the UK now leads to increased numbers of grant and fellowship applications, pushing down the success rates. Since also overheads increased, in some cases we will see success rates halved. There is a BBSRC fellowship which will have a success rate of 5%.

I just cancelled my attendance at the GRC Phagocytes conference in June. This was not an easy decision as it is an amazing meeting and we had a great project to present. However, it just does not feel safe at the moment to go to the US. I urge GRC to organise future meetings outside of the US.

I think UKRI needs to have a serious look at their grant panels and reviewers. Not only my own experience that more and more outstanding applications get not funded for dubious reasons while I know of total crap applications (so named by the applicants) get funded. 1/3
