We are in the midst of an all-out attempt to exclude the global majority from science. Watson was clear about where he fell on that. I would trade every single dinner, meeting, seminar, fancy campus, and prestigious donor for my incredible friends to be safer. Their science is worth far more.

Not only was the content of his comments damaging, but the fact that he could say such things and still get invited to give seminars and get plenty of accolades. When i saw him speak as a young grad student I couldn't believe what he was allowed to say as if it were important science

His comments were not going out to nowhere. He directly told the brilliant and incredible grad students, postdocs, particularly people he had no reason to fear because they were in vulnerable and low power positions -- that they did not belong in science bsky.app/profile/anal...

When people celebrate the individual genius of folks in science, they should also mourn the collective loss of genius of folks who were actively discouraged or disadvantaged from a career in science because of the same person(s)

I remember reading his book "avoid boring people" and was horrified by his depiction of women. I went to a talk by him in grad school and it was even worse. Truly just a garbage person.

The Leading Edge community has been a life-line as I navigate *points to everything*. Zara was such a shining light of wisdom and warmth. She will be sorely missed, but her legacy will continue in everyone who had the utmost privilege to interact with her. Apply, apply, apply!!!!

Zara was an inspiration. We never met in person but became friends through Leading Edge. She zealously advocated for her ideals, but was also passionate about helping others realize why they should too. Her loss is gutting & the world is the worse for it. 4. If you're looking for a postdoc and you're not looking outside of the US - what in the world are you thinking??? This is not a place to establish a stable science career at the moment.

This is pretty horrifying, especially as someone who was detained by a police officer for a couple of hours as a TEENAGER (21 years ago) because he thought my friend and I were terrorists because we were Indian and Chinese and had cameras. I shudder to think what would happen now.
