While Trump is eroding civil liberties, NYC cannot expand police discretion over when and where people can speak and organize. Today I voted against two bills that would require the police to plan buffer zones where protest would be restricted outside of schools and houses of worship.

ICYMI: I chaired last week’s Civil & Human Rights preliminary budget hearing. The message was clear: the agencies responsible for protecting NYers from discrimination & advancing racial equity are being chronically underfunded, weakening enforcement when people need it most.

TBT to last week’s first-ever hearing of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood Education. Early childhood providers - overwhelmingly women of color - are the backbone of this system. Yet too many are paid poverty wages & forced to work 2nd and 3rd jobs. We have to stop paying women less to do more.

Tens of thousands of New Yorkers are living in undignified conditions. The SAFER Homes Act aims to reinvent the Third Party Transfer program by going after the most neglectful owners, while protecting and expanding homeownership opportunities.

Though understandably overlooked due to Z's star power, another major electoral win in NYC last year was the election of more progressives to the Council. @nycprogressives.bsky.social, which has developed its most ideologically coherent culture in years, now has 24 members—just 2 shy of a majority.
