NEW: A federal immigration judge ruled that there was no lawful basis for our client, Rümeysa Öztürk, to be deported. This is promising news, but her case is still ongoing in federal court. We’ll keep fighting until she's free for good.

This is a critical week in the fight to rein in ICE and Border Patrol's lawless operations as Congress continues to fight over ICE's budget. With Senator Schumer leading those negotiations, and with only days to go until Friday's deadline, we must demand he keep up the fight.

The federal government has a plan to convert a warehouse located in Chester, NY into an ICE detention facility. But despite the frigid temperatures, New Yorkers have turned out in droves to make their voices heard: We don't want mass detention camps in our communities. ICE has no place in New York.

Last fall, armed federal agents raided the Nutrition Bar Confectioners Facility in Cato, NY and rounded up 160 workers, questioning them about their citizenship or immigration status. At least 57 workers were detained. This was a clear violation of the 4th Amendment. Here's what else we know 👇

Today Gov. Hochul signed the Medical Aid in Dying Act, which gives people living with terminal illnesses the option to request, through a tightly regulated process, medication they can self-administer to transition peacefully. NYers deserve to be able to make deeply personal end-of-life choices.

ICE represents an abuse of power that thrives on intimidation and dehumanization. Its wrongs are not inevitable, and they are not inherited. We will not be silent in the face of authoritarian ploys that endanger our communities.

ICE’s abuses threaten all of our constitutional rights. As Trump launches such a serious, highly dangerous attack on due process, it’s critical New Yorkers remember their rights under the Fourth Amendment: you do not have to open your door unless an immigration officer shows you a judicial warrant.

Gov. Hochul proposed new legislation that rightly recognizes that allowing local police to become agents of ICE undermines community trust + safety. But it's not enough. While much is still unknown about the mayor's proposed Department of Community Safety, we know this: New Yorkers in mental health crisis need support that the police can't - and shouldn't - offer. We must end our over-reliance on police as first responders in every crisis.

In 2024 alone, the NYPD made 855,750 traffic stops and searched over 28,000 cars. Black and Latinx drivers respectively are about ten and six times more likely to have their cars searched by the NYPD than white drivers. This is stop-and-frisk on wheels, and we’re suing to stop it.

The 287(g) program, which deputizes local police officers to act as immigration agents, makes our communities less safe and drains our resources.

Freedom of the Press is under escalating attack—through intimidation, through coercion, and today, through the baseless arrests of @donlemonofficial.bsky.social and Georgia Fort. Fascists fear the truth, so they perceive the First Amendment as a threat. But democracy flounders without a free press.

Mayor Mamdani is right: We must disband the notoriously violent SRG. But, we must also ensure that the aggressive tactics it’s known for are not simply redeployed by other NYPD units. That’s where the CURB Act comes in.

In 2023, NYPD officers pulled our client, Justin, out of his car frisked him, and despite finding nothing illegal, arrested him. The NYPD’s targeting of Black + Latinx drivers with baseless vehicle searches is nothing more than stop-and-frisk on wheels, and it must come to an end.

The Safer Sanctuary Act is a critical bill that helps ensure that collusion between local law enforcement and federal immigration officials on Rikers is prohibited. By overriding Adams's veto of this bill, the NY City Council is affirming its commitment to keeping ICE off Rikers Island for good.

BREAKING: Along with the NAACP New York State Conference, the Bronx Defenders, and Milbank LLP, we are suing the NYPD for disproportionately targeting Black and Latino drivers with unconstitutional vehicle searches. This essentially amounts to stop-and-frisk on wheels, and it must come to an end.

This is a start, but it's a mistake to not override Adams's veto of a common-sense police accountability bill. Intro 1451-2025—which passed last year w/ a veto-proof majority—would grant the CCRB direct access to unsealed NYPD body-worn camera footage. The NYPD needs more oversight - not less.

ICE is terrorizing communities across New York. Yet despite the growing terror and disruption, the NY State legislature has not passed a single bill to protect immigrants in over a year. This is unacceptable. The legislature must immediately pass the New York for All Act.

While this is promising news, Liam and his father — like hundreds of other families — remain detained in Texas. No child or family belongs in ICE detention.
