I’d say this week went swimmingly.

Last month, 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan was killed after he was thrown from a horse-drawn carriage in Central Park.   While there is nothing we can do to change the tragedy of his death, passing a law to transition away from horse-drawn carriages is one way to keep his blessed memory alive.

Today, I'm announcing my support for Romanch's Law.   It's time for New York City to begin the transition away from horse-drawn carriages in Central Park — for the safety of New Yorkers, visitors, and the horses themselves.

Small businesses are drowning in red tape. That's why the Council announced a pair of bills yesterday to support them by reducing fines and streamlining the inspection, permitting, and approval processes.

There are now 36 cases of Legionnaires' disease associated with the Upper East Side cluster, with 22 hospitalizations. If you live, work, or have visited the neighborhood in recent weeks and you're experiencing flu-like symptoms, you should speak to your healthcare provider immediately.

Today’s groundbreaking at 2 World Trade Center is further proof that New York City remains a top destination for businesses to call home. This project will create thousands of good-paying union jobs and billions of dollars in economic impact — amazing news for the future of our city and economy.

Hunger affects New Yorkers of every age, race, and religion. ICNA Relief has made it their mission to provide food to those who need it most. That’s why the Council was proud to allocate $25,000 in this year’s budget to support their fight to end hunger in NYC.

Recent attempts at intimidating Council Member Phil Wong and his staff are completely unacceptable.
 Today, I visited Council Member Wong’s office in Maspeth to make clear that the NYC Council will not tolerate intimidation or harassment against New Yorkers or our colleagues representing them.  

The Upper East Side just got better access to our beautiful waterfront with the re-opening of the 71st St. Esplanade Pedestrian Bridge! Grateful to the Hospital of Special Surgery, NYC Parks, and NYC Economic Development Corporation for their collaboration on this important restoration.

My thoughts are with the officers who were injured earlier today in Brooklyn. Fortunately, both are expected to make a full recovery. I’m grateful for the work the NYPD do every day — but particularly for their vigilance throughout this long holiday weekend to keeping New Yorkers safe.

Hotel workers deserve living wages and affordable healthcare. I am proud to stand with HTC members at the Fairfield and Four Points Hotel who are striking. We in the City Council stand with our HTC family — whose labor is the backbone of our hospitality industry.

For too long, families like my own have been denied answers about what past administrations knew about the 9/11 toxins that killed our loved ones. Now, with funding secured by the Council, these long-awaited records will be released. It’s the truth our families deserve.

The college savings account program I helped launch has already served more than 340,000 students with $100 investments. Yesterday, the Council expanded the NYC Kids RISE program TENFOLD — with a $1K investment for every public school kindergartner. Big win for our kids! Big win for NYC's future!

Last night, I spoke at the Girl Scouts Gala where the Gold Award was given to outstanding individuals. There are over 20,000 Girl Scouts across New York City, and the Girl Scouts are shaping the next generation of leaders. They also have delicious cookies. My favorite? Thin Mints.

What an honor to be inducted into the Manhattan Jewish Historical Initiative's Hall of Fame last night. At a moment when Jewish New Yorkers are facing ever-increasing threats, being recognized for my advocacy and contributions to this city means more than I can say.

New York City sends billions more to Albany than we get back. That must change. In our April 1st budget response, the Council identified billions in savings, protected services, and put forward proposals to generate revenue from the highest earners.
