From the beginning, Bezos made it clear that the only place he'd be investing on the culture side of the Post was books. Then he made other pivots that alienated that core erudite audience. Presumably the clicks fell. Still absolutely devastating to lose the Books section.

The publishing industry -- and readers! -- needs The Washington Post. Quality literary fiction and smallish but important nonfiction can sink or swim based on a Post review.
