What I then found odder was that, after the debate but before the vote, a procedural quirk meant Douglas Ross spoke for five minutes about seagull attacks. (After the vote they spoke about nuclear weapons, which I suppose would be one approach for stopping the attacks?)

I feel hugely honoured to be asked to be lead fiction judge for the 2026 Neil Gunn writing competition, open to writers worldwide. I first read Gunn as a 17 year-old pupil in the school just down the road from where his monument stands today. To a young Highlander, his writing was transformational.

Yes, I'm a journalist who's critical of Farage and Reform UK. But I'm an accredited journalist with a press card, I'm the political editor of a weekly magazine, and when I registered back in May I got confirmation it was "successful". Until today, when it's now "declined". Here's the pics:

Fernando (33), who was 12 when he came to the UK, was detained by the Home Office as part of their upgraded immigration raids. Held for 29 days. We are supporting him with an application for settled status. No way to know, but this is unlikely to be isolated.
