So those riders *have* to use their bank cards or digital wallets. And while officials insist they are being transparent, they aren't really giving up many details at all. For several days in a row, I asked the transit authority in NYC some very straightforward questions.

Officials repeatedly told me that if riders are worried about being tracked, they can pay the fare in cash. But advocates told me that's near-impossible for riders who live on bus lines far from the transit hubs where you can load cash onto a pre-paid card.
